Show 51: Devo - The Walker Centre, Minneapolis - 3 November 1978

Devo, at a point in their history before they jumped fully into the synthpop pool and wrote hits like "Whip It". Back in 1978 they were still primarily an edgy, quirky guitar band with synths. Its a great soundboard recording which has polished up really well and sounds first rate.

Show 49: Siouxsie and The Banshees - Janus Landing, St Petersburg, Florida - 22 August 1987

After the release of their 8th album, Through The Looking Glass, the Banshees went on tour to the USA and Canada. This gig is the penultimate gig from that tour. It's a soundboard recording of the full gig and includes tracks from right through their career to that point. It's responded well to a bit of tweaking.

Show 48: The Human League - Kant Kino, Berlin - 23 November 1980

A show that proved very very popular on broadcast, and afterwards. There are very few quality live recordings of The Human League and almost nothing from their early days. This one in particular is one of those where the historical value of the gig makes it worth presenting, even if the sound quality is less than perfect. This took a lot of tweaking, to say the least - but its popularity I guess means that people enjoyed it! I think its the best you'll hear them from this time.

Please note that unfortunately the last encore track, Empire State Human, wasn't present in the files I received and is therefore missing from this set.

Show 47: Eurythmics - Night Moves, Glasgow - 25 Feb 1983

Just as they were hitting the big time, shortly after the release of the "Sweet Dreams" single, this is an interesting listen to a band who, of course, went pretty global not long after.

This was originally an FM recording and so is an excerpt of the full gig. Once again its been remastered - the original recording I had was actually at the wrong speed, which made Annie Lennox sound a bit like she was on helium! So a bit more work on this one but I hope you enjoy it!

Show 44: Ultravox - Hot Club, Philadelphia, USA - 23 February 1979

Another show from Ultravox now - from their very last tour of the USA just before singer John Foxx and guitarist Robin Simon decided to leave and Ultravox were effectively put on hold until Midge Ure joined later on that year and they reinvented themselves.

A clear soundboard recording, this has responded brilliantly to some EQ and mastering and sounds crystal clear. Enjoy!

Show 43: Japan - Their Final Concert - Nagoya, Japan - 16 December 1982

From the same tour that produced the Oil On Canvas list album, listen to this gig and compare it with the show from the Polaroids tour taken from the year before. Here they sound like a band worn out by their differences, keen for the adventure to end. And this night, it did. This is the very last gig Japan ever played together.

This is a soundboard recording but the quality isn't quite A1 - however, its responded pretty well to the fairy dust I've sprinkled on it so I hope you agree its more than listenable. The occasion was recorded and deserves to be heard.

Incidentally, die hard Japan fans will know 2 tracks are missing from the setlist here. There is an unofficial vinyl double album bootleg of this gig which is the only place you can find the final 2 tracks  played on the night - "Life In Tokyo" and "Fall In Love With Me". If anyone has a copy of that, do let me know!

The Police went mega, I guess, with the release of their 3rd album, Zenyatta Mondatta in 1980. This show captures them on their world tour early the following year, following that album's release, at the famous Japanese venue.

Show 40: The Beatles - Live in Sweden 1963 and Japan 1966

Two recordings for the price of one - from Swedish radio on 24 October 1963, recorded (as you'll hear) in front of a live audience the Karlaplan Studio, and from 30 June 1966 at the Budokan Hall, in Tokyo.

Rather than me waffle on and repeat information already elsewhere, there's a web page about the performance on Swedish radio here. Suffice to say, John Lennon apparently thought it was the best live recording there ever was of the Beatles.

The second recording from the Budokan was possibly a radio broadcast at the time - soundboard recordings are usually known for the audience being quiet and they're certainly not here! Featuring live renditions of "Yesterday" and "Nowhere Man" its an interesting snapshot of The Beatles just as they were about to give up live tours altogether a couple of months later.

Show 39: Yazoo - The Dominion Theatre, London - 22 November 1982

From their 1 and only tour while they were together originally, comes this recording of Yazoo with the full and complete set from their gig at The Dominion with the instrumental, "Chinese Detectives" restored into the set after "Midnight". Slightly lesser sound quality than the rest of the gig but better its there I think, than not!

This one probably took the most amount of work to restore. I had 2 versions of this - 1 being better quality than the other, but the poor quality one had more tracks in it! And the better quality one was actually at the wrong speed! Anyway, all that work means Yazoo fans finally get a complete gig in decent sound quality. Its turned out pretty well and I think sounds far better than the originals I worked from. I hope you enjoy it.

Show 38: Adam And The Ants - Sun Plaza Hall, Tokyo, Japan - 8 October 1981

This is taken from the world tour which took up much of 1981, which followed on the back of the successful release of the "Kings of The Wild Frontier" album in the Autumn of 1980. I think this was also the soundtrack to a long deleted VHS video of the gig. It still needed a bit of work to bring out the sound quality but really responded well to some studio magic.

Its a great record of the Ants live, driven by the powerhouse of 2 drummers, and complete with screaming audience!

Show 37: Elvis Presley - Robinson Auditorium, Little Rock, Arkansas - 16 May 1956

The earliest recording its been my pleasure to come across so far. Clearly its not comparable to an FM radio or soundboard recording as such but is a wonderful snapshot of a historic moment in musical history. Elvis Presley live in concert after the release of his huge hit single Heartbreak Hotel. Recorded by a radio DJ (who you can hear on the recording here and there), the recording was rather muddy and DJ Fontana on drums was almost unheard - I've done what I can to bring out the instruments and reduce noise and its certainly very listenable.

As you can see Hound Dog appears twice, once as the normal speed version and once as a slower reprise - which was probably an excellent excuse for Elvis to gyrate his hips, judging by the amount of screaming from the girls in the audience! As a bonus, the recording closes with a brief interview with Elvis backstage after the show - hardly in depth but certainly an interesting historical piece.

The Little Rock Interview

Show 36: Simon and Garfunkel - The Hollywood Bowl, California - 23 August 1968

They released their 4th album "Bookends" in March 1968 and spent a lot of time gigging that year. Clearly, playing the Hollywood Bowl, they were a big deal by 1968 and they deliver a superb set in this recording.

A wonderful performance full of energy and good humour. The performance was recorded by Al Kooper, and was possibly intended for an official live album. A few recording anomalies (the guitar hitting Paul's mic stand and tape saturation) likely commanded a veto from the CBS Records executives. It's a shame, because, aside from a few recording baubles, the show is certainly worth an official release. I hope you enjoy this version instead! Of special note are the performances of "Overs," "At The Zoo," "Leaves That Are Green," "The Dangling Conversation," and "Old Friends / Bookends."

I'm told this recording was released as a bootleg entitled "Voice of Intelligent Dissent" in its original form. I hope those of you who know that enjoy what I've done with it. Its a soundboard recording of the full gig and with some noise reduction and light tidying up, it sounds superb. I hope you enjoy it.

This features Spandau Ballet at the height of their popularity after the release of "True", which became a big hit in the Netherlands and when the follow single "Gold" had just broke into the top 5.

They appeared on the same bill on this night as Aretha Franklin and...The Beach Boys, believe it or not. Featuring a set including hits and a couple of interesting covers, Squeeze show what a good live band they were.

***UPDATE 2022***

Well...back when I did this it was believed the last night of the tour - which this gig clearly IS - was in Calgary. But following someone commenting below that that the last night was actually in Edmonton, Canada on 12 November 1980, I started doing some detective work. THIS is that gig. So the date is RIGHT but the venue is WRONG.

Mislabeled as Calgary back in 2013 when I found this (or was sent it, I forget which). I am pretty sure back then, online sources also had the last night of the tour as being Calgary but that has been corrected in several places since. Apparently the 2 dates were transposed when the tour was originally announced but later changed so Edmonton came at the end.

I am indebted to the poster in the comments for bringing this to my attention, and also a good friend of mine, Jeff Tolva, for helping to clear this up, and also providing the 2 images below as proof that THIS gig is actually from the Kinsmen Field House, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 12 November 1980, and is definitely the last night of the tour - as you can hear Gary telling everyone that before the final encore.

Numan released his second solo album "Telekon" in the Autumn of 1980 and embarked on his second major tour in 12 months - and his second in the USA and Canada in 7 months. This recording features the full set from the very last night of the Teletour, after he'd already made up his mind that he would retire from touring. The show gets better through the set I think, and the last song in the set, We Are Glass, is especially exciting with lots of analogue synths squawking away.
 

What Was Done

This is a soundboard recording and had deteriorated with age a bit. EQ'ing and remastering has brought out the best of it I think and it's now far more listenable - it certainly proved popular with Numan fans.

Show 31: Kraftwerk - Captain Video, Paris, France - 6 July 1981

EDIT: Since this page (and the remaster) were done, its come to light that the recording is NOT from 7 June, but from 6 July! The gig is still in Paris, at a venue called Captain Video - which also is referred to as Studio Gabriel on more than 1 source on the internet. Copies of a ticket and advert from the gig are shown below. And I must also give thanks to Arnaud, from a Kraftwerk group on Facebook for helping identify this gig properly.

Kraftwerk embarked on their Computerworld tour after the release in May 1981 of the album with the same name. They ended up on tour until the end of the year. This gig is from the early part of the tour and for me provides an interesting contrast to the Kraftwerk of today, where everything is note perfect, ordered, clinical, sterile. Back in 1981 there was an awful lot of synths being played manually and so timing errors and bum notes are clearly evident! And also towards the end of the gig, it does actually sound like they're really into it and excited! This is the Kraftwerk I prefer, if I'm honest. They may not be perfect but it does make for a more interesting and less predictable performance.

I think this was a soundboard - the quality really wasn't very good however and went through a few generations I think before I got it. There was a good amount of restoration and remastering on this one; so while its not quite as clear as some of the shows in this archive, I think its been worth it.

Show 29: The Undertones - Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands - 15 March 1980

The Undertones had just finished recording their 2nd album, Hypnotised, then embarked on a tour of Ireland and Europe. This particular gig is taken from a gig recorded for Dutch radio at the time. I'm guessing its not the complete show as its only about 36 minutes long but despite that, they crammed in 14 songs!

Being an FM radio broadcast, the mix was ok but the copy I had wasn't the greatest and needed quite a bit of work to restore. That said, it sounds very listenable now - and certainly better than the original.  I hope you enjoy it.

Show 28: OMD - Kant Kino, Berlin, Germany - 8 December 1980

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. A short tour of the UK and Europe followed the release of their 2nd album "Organisation" in the Autumn of 1980 and this soundboard recording is taken from that tour. The crowd were so enthusiastic that night the band were forced to come back on for a second encore - and as Andy McCluskey had to admit, had run out of material, so several songs were played twice! Its a great performance; a great gig by a band still in the early stages of their career.

The soundboard recording needed a bit of work - being over 30 years old - but has polished up well and responded to some remastering. I hope you agree; this one certainly proved popular with many OMD fans.

Show 27: Japan - Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK - 7 February 1981

From the tour in support of their 4th album, "Gentlemen Take Polaroids", comes this FM radio recording featuring a selection of tracks from their live set. Its interesting to compare this performance with the later Japan show I did, from their last tour before splitting up. They have far more vibrancy and enthusiasm here, I think.

The recording needed a bit of repair but responded well to remastering and has proved very popular among Japan fans.

Show 26: Queen - The Summit Arena, Houston, Texas, USA - 11 December 1977

From their News of The World tour - which started with a warm up gig in London in October 1977 and ended there in May 1978 - comes this powerhouse of a show from early on in the tour while they were in the USA. Its a fantastic soundboard recording which it was a pleasure to work on and improve - this version sounds really excellent.

Show 25: Teardrop Explodes - Guildford Civic Hall, UK - 18 June 1981

A show from their UK tour at the height of their popularity - with their debut album released the previous year and 2 hit singles in 1981. Including tracks from that album and their second, due to be released a few months later - including Passionate Friend, which would be their next hit single.

This was an FM radio broadcast and has responded well to remastering - plenty of punch to this show.

Show 24: Mike Oldfield - The Sporthalle, Cologne, Germany - 2 November 1982

Please note: I originally did this in early 2013. Since then, this gig - without Platinum Pts 1 and 2 and Ommadawn Pt 1 but with the addition of Guilty - has been remixed, remastered and released officially now as extras on the reissue of the Five Miles Out album. BUY THAT. I have it and it's superb - the quality more than surpasses this recording. So if you like this, buy that (if you don't have it already).

The Five Miles Out world tour kicked off in April 1982 in Brooklyn, USA and didn't finish until December that year in Munich, Germany. The tour took in the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Scandinavia, the UK and many dates in mainland Europe. 

This was a good soundboard recording that has appeared on a few bootlegs over the years; it was a real pleasure to remaster this - it really does sound superbly clear now and captures a great performance in superb detail.

Show 23: Devo - The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, USA - 11 November 1982

A gig from their groundbreaking tour after the release of their "Oh No Its Devo" album in 1982, which featured them performing against live video synchronised alongside the songs. Not something that was generally undertaken back then when equipment was far more primitive then than now. There are a couple of songs faded out where they had been cut off in the original recording - but this is still the best record of this tour (that I've found, anyway)

This is a soundboard recording and has responded really well to remastering - as a Devo fan myself I might be a bit biased but I think it sounds really really good.

Show 22: Simple Minds - Werchter Festival, Belgium - 3 July 1983

I must admit that while I'm quite a fan of Simple Minds from their early days, by 1983 they'd gone a bit overblown for my tastes - but then, that's just as they got really popular I suppose, so what do I know?! :-)

This is a soundboard recording which is slightly bass heavy even after remastering but still acts as a great record of Simple Minds appearing at this annual festival in Werchter, Belgium.

Show 21: Depeche Mode - 1981 and 1980

2 for the price of 1 this time - I found these gigs and couldn't resist trying to restore them. Depeche Mode just before they hit the big time. The 1981 gig is a real gem - a gig 2 weeks after New Life, their first single to breach the charts, was released. I think this was a soundboard recording, its polished up really well - an exciting, raw performance with nothing but a reel to reel tape recorder and analogue synths.

And if you ever wondered how Just Can't Get Enough would sound starting with a bossa nova rhythm...well, you came to the right place...

The Croc's gig is quite short so back in 2013 I broadcast it along with an even earlier gig I found - one of their earliest gigs that exists on tape - from the Bridgehouse in London from October 1980. This was several months before the release of their first single, "Dreaming of Me".  The version I had then was an audience recording and had been "restored" by someone already to remove tape hiss - not too well. So while I was able to make it pretty listenable, it still wasn't great, hence it being a bonus here and not the main show. Even so, its fascinating and still entertaining to hear DM play several unreleased tracks and early versions of other songs which would become well known later.

2019 UPDATE
While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality of the Croc's gig further, over what I’d originally done to the recording back in 2013. I also found a different recording of the Bridgehouse recording! Which revealed the copy I had in 2013 was missing a song, and was in the wrong order! So I set to work on this other recording, starting from scratch. It had been "mastered" by someone in the past but had distorted bass through much of it and sounded quite murky. I've been able to remove most of that bass distortion and also widen the sound a bit, so it seems quite a bit clearer! It's a vast improvement on the earlier version I had from 6 years ago.

Show 18: ABBA - Live In 1979

A bootleg (originally called Sweet Dreams Are Made of This) containing performances from a gig at Wembley in London in late 1979 apparently, plus material from a TV special. My initial research suggested it was 1981 - but that was definitely wrong; they're 1979. I couldn't find out much more, however!

What I CAN tell you is that some EQ and remastering brought out the quality nicely and this has proved to be one of the most popular broadcasts I did.

Show 17: The Comsat Angels - Rotterdam Arena, Netherlands - 22 October 1983

A band from Sheffield who had much critical acclaim but sadly little commercial success. They'd just recorded their fourth album "Land" when this gig took place. This was an FM recording (broadcast, I assume,  in the Netherlands, seeing as that's where the gig is from!) and has polished up nicely.

Show 16: Ultravox - Marquee, London, UK - 26 December 1978

The last John Foxx-led incarnation of Ultravox, playing at the old Marquee club in London, on Boxing Day (no rest for the wicked!). They'd already released their 3rd (and arguably most influential) album, Systems of Romance and would split up just a few short months later. The set also features two tracks which Ultravox never released - but which would be released later by John Foxx on his first two solo albums.

This was a fairly battered soundboard recording released on vinyl, which had since been through a few generations I think - even so, the studio trickery has made it more than listenable - its a great record of a great band at their creative peak. I remember when I broadcast this, someone got in touch to tell me they were listening and this was the first gig they were ever taken to and what great memories it brought back. Comments like that - and hearing how much people enjoy listening to them - make the time spent on these more than worthwhile.

This was originally a gig broadcast on Spanish television at the time and this was a fairly dry soundboard mix I think. Its responded fairly well to remastering, so if you like Talk Talk in their later period, you will enjoy this. The recording seemed to be a little bit slow, so I corrected that too.
