Show 158 - Nirvana - Live At The Palladium, Hollywood - 17 August 1990
A debut on Live and Loud! for Nirvana, in a restored recording from their tour of the west coast of America with Sonic Youth in August 1990.
The recording was generally in good shape - I removed a couple of clicks, sorted out the sound balance and repaired a gap in 1 of the songs - anyone not familiar with the original bootleg won't be able to tell where that was now! Once that was done, using the 30 band EQ brought back the kick drum, created some space and lifted Kurt's voice, creating a much clearer recording. This is a great record of how Nirvana sounded after losing Chad Channing on drums and before they met Dave Grohl and went on to record Nevermind the following year.
The restored recording is now available for free HERE. You can safely download this restored, unique recording as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way.

Show 157 - Billy Idol - Live At The Cow Palace, Daly City - 11 May 1987
A debut on Live and Loud! for Billy Idol in a restored FM radio recording from his Whiplash Smile tour of 1987.
The basic recording was sound enough but had some noise, odd bass rumbles, FM noise and tape dropouts to fix before I could get to the 30 band EQ part... the fairly thin radio recording now sounds far better with improved separation between the instruments and a much fuller live sound.
The restored recording is now available for free HERE. You can safely download this restored, unique recording as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way.

Show 156 - OMD - Live At YMCA, London - 14 March 1980
A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit (you know who you are). Thanks.
This audience recording was originally sent to me by a regular listener to these shows, along with a request..."can you do something with this?".
Well, you can hear a clip of what he sent me in the intro in the file below but basically...I didn't think I could! It sounded like it was recorded outside the venue, through a door. The recording had deteriorated quite a bit, it was running at the wrong speed, there were several bits of distortion...there was a lot to do. But I honestly didn't think there was enough of the gig itself there to do much with.
But I had a go, and I was wrong! It was never going to end up as a crystal clear recording worthy of an official release but after spending quite a few hours on it - it has turned out very listenable! And at least now sounds like it was recorded INSIDE the venue...and Andy no longer sounds like he's been castrated...
So download it, have a listen to the intro, the original recording...and then the restoration and hear the difference! An interesting set, featuring a very early live airing for the as yet unreleased Enola Gay, and a cover of Dalek I Love You's Two Chameleons and The Velvet Underground's Waiting For The Man.
The restored recording is now available for free HERE. You can safely download this restored, unique recording as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way.

New Versions Of Old Shows Uploaded
Those of you who have been here a while might remember that when someone is kind enough to donate and support the website, they get to choose which gigs they'd like as separated files. When people ask for old shows, before I split them into a file per song, I see if I can improve what I did first time around, make the improvements, then the donater gets a better sounding version and I then update the main site with a new MP3 of the improved version so anyone can grab the new version.
That last part I got a bit slack on this year for 1 reason or another, so I've just been catching up - there are now 5 old shows which have just been updated on the site. Links to the page of each, where you can grab the new versions, are here:
Bauhaus
Live in Boston 2005
The Undertones
Live at Paradiso Amsterdam - March 1980
Zuiderpark Rotterdam - September 1980
Blondie
Live at Hammersmith Odeon London - 12 January 1980
Elvis Costello
Winterland San Francisco - 7 June 1978
Have a look through the site and you will often see on the pages for the older shows that a recently updated version exists - from 2018 onwards, usually. These will sound better than the original restorations done - sometimes back in 2012, so go take a browse and grab your self some live sounds!
And remember, if you wish to support the site and donate, all the info on what you can get in return is on THIS PAGE. Either way, enjoy the music!

Show 155 - Madness - Live At Paradiso, Amsterdam - 2 February 1980
A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.
The Show
This is another of those recordings I thought would be quick and easy. I had a 6 track recording of Madness from this gig - an old FM radio broadcast. I spent some time working on it, announced what I was doing on the Facebook group and page and one of my listeners got in touch to say he knew of a 10 track version! Once he pointed me in the direction of it (only in MP3 format unfortunately) and I had a listen, I scrapped everything I'd done on the 6 track version and set to work on this one - I took the view it was better to have 10 tracks than 6, despite the slightly inferior source quality.
What Was Done
After converting it to 1 long WAV, the first thing was - it was way too fast and high pitched! Suggs sounded like he was on helium and the whole band was on speed (!) so I spent a fair bit of time matching the pitch and speed to other recordings from the same year before doing anything else. Then it was correcting a few glitches in the recording - tape dropouts etc. Then 30 band EQ to bring back some low end and remove a harsh high end, before finally moving to the mastering which tightened up the whole recording a lot.

Show 154 - Japan - Live At Newcastle City Hall - 1 Jun 1978
After the last Japan show I restored (HERE), I was contacted by Rob Dean, from the band and asked if I could have a go at restoring this recording, which had recently come to light. He put me in touch with Stephen Holden, who had been gifted a copy of the recording by the original owner. Stephen has recently written a book about his time following the band in their early days - see below for details on how to obtain a copy of that.
This is a recording of Japan, supporting Blue Oyster Cult on their UK nationwide tour in mid 1978. The band's first taste of playing larger venues, I guess. Their set includes tracks from their recently released first album, and their upcoming second.
The original mono recording itself was a typical 1970s cassette recording, quite murky, slightly distorted in places but also with a few weird fadeouts - during Suburban Love and the intro to Don't Rain On My Parade in particular. Fadeouts in particular I can't do much about but I tweaked them as much as I dared and they're less extreme than they were, now.
Otherwise plenty of work went into correcting sound imbalances, trying to make the sound mix clearer so you can hear the drums, bass etc clearer, and so on. I also created a pseudo stereo version from the original mono file and restored that separately - so I effectively did this show twice. Lots also went into that too and its a bit clearer to listen to (to me) but you get the choice - mono, stereo, or both. All in all, this all took a bit longer than usual but was more than worthwhile, given some of the awful recordings out there.
You can safely download this restored, unique recording for free below as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way:

Show 153 - Bill Nelson's Red Noise - Live at Sheffield City Hall - 13 March 1979
A first gig for Bill Nelson on the Live and Loud! archive (hopefully not the last) with his short lived band Red Noise with a gig from their one and only tour in support of their album Sound On Sound.
This was an FM broadcast from the time, so isn't the complete show. It was, at some point doctored by someone else as the levels were high and there were signs of compression too (but only on the last track, strangely, so that needed treating separately). There were quite a few stereo imaging issues too, and some of the recording level was a little high, resulting in some clipping or distortion.
After running various toys over the audio, then EQ and a little noise reduction. plus correcting the stereo image where I could, this is the final result - loud bits under control, lots less distortion and far clearer. Red Noise were a powerful live band and I think this recording now brings that out!

Show 152 - Boomtown Rats - Live At The NHK Hall Tokyo - 1 May 1980
A long overdue return for The Boomtown Rats, who were one of the early bands featured on Live and Loud! in 2012 (see this page for an improved version of that one).
This was an FM radio broadcast which had been reworked (not very well) by someone at some point - everything very loud, all the way through. While listening to the gig to fix and clicks and tape dropouts, I realised the tracks were also in the wrong order! For some reason, someone had reordered the tracks with odd bits cut off where the edits had been made. Eventually, with the help of a friend who had an original copy of the taped bootleg, and referencing other gigs from that tour, I was able to put it all back together in the right order.
Once that was done, much sound restoration went into the final copy, to reverse what had been done before and also to improve what was there. So, rather more work than I expected on this one BUT... it sounds superb now, really pleased with this one. And just as an aside, this gig (as Geldof says) saw the first live outing for Diamond Smiles, which appears as the last song.

Show 151 - Devo - Live At The Palladium Dallas Texas - 4 Aug 1979
A welcome return for Devo to the Live and Loud! archives. Shows from their Duty Now For The Future tour are fairly rare so I was glad to come across this one, containing several unreleased gems.
Although my copy of this gig in lossless format didn't come from there directly, I must give a big shoutout to the guys at Booji Boy's Basement who transferred the original taped material and have been maintaining an online archive accessible to fans for many years.
Although it is an audience recording, and had a few faults, I've been able to upgrade the sound quality a lot. I removed some of the room ambience you always get with audience shows, fixed some errors and tape drop outs, some clicks, pops and odd noises, did what I could with some overloaded volume as well as slowed the pitch and speed a little as it was running too fast. After all that, I used a bit of studio magic, 30 band EQ and finally some mastering tools to finish off.

Show 150 - The Human League - Live At Rolling Stone Club Milan - 17 March 1982
A gig from this tour has been requested more than once over the years - and finally I can deliver. An interesting and rare recording of The Human League on the European leg of their Dare tour in 1982.
I've obtained more than 1 recording of this gig over the years of different quality - and also like the Japan gig I did recently, attributed to different places...including the gig of 14 March 1982 in Lyon, France...but given they are the same gig, Philip Oakey says "ciao!" and refers to them next time playing La Scala at the end of the gig, and (possibly) Jo Callis says "arrivederci!" I think we can assume they're actually in Milan. :-)
There's a bootleg called "Drumset Mystery" of this gig - and the copy I heard of that too was pretty poor quality and very hissy. I think this must be a different recording altogether of the same gig, it sounds like it was recorded nearer the front of the audience. In any case, I went through this and spent a few days on it - removed some of the room ambience, fixed gaps, errors, tape drop outs, clicks and odd noises, overloaded volume, changed the pitch and speed as it was running slightly too fast, then treated and EQed the sound to get as much as possible out of what was there.
I'm pleased with the result; I hope you enjoy it. Other sites are starting to take these restorations, butcher the artwork and put it up on their own site with filled with advertising and pop up links - only from here are you guaranteed no pop ups, no advertising, no viruses - just the show itself.

Show 149 - Japan - Live At The Budokan, Tokyo - 16 March 1980
**MARCH 2021 PLEASE NOTE**
This free show has now been taken down the new boxed set release of the Quiet Life album has included 1 of the bootlegs I used for this show - and as such, that now being an official release (even if it hasn't been enhanced in any way) means this has to come down. I never knowingly offer free copies of commercially available gigs. They're still saying its from 27 March apparently but nobody's perfect...
So the information below is now for information only. Thanks to the 1129 of you who downloaded the show before it got taken down.
An overdue return this time for Japan, and hopefully clearing up some badly identified bootlegs in the process. If you don't care about all that - just head down to the last paragraph and click on the link - for the rest of you, read on...
There are a few recordings (I had been sent 3 different ones) of gigs from the Quiet Life tour of Japan in March 1980 - some say they're from The Budokan, 16 March; others are labeled as 27 March at "Mito Hall, Tokyo". Most also purport to be FM recordings...which they're not.
There was only one gig recorded, that is known for definite - and that's the Budokan gig on 16 March. Those bootlegs labeled Mito Hall and 27 March are ALL the same Budokan gig from 16 March. There is actually NO SUCH PLACE as "Mito Hall"; although the band did indeed play a venue in the city of Mito on 27 March, no genuine recording has ever come to light of that one. My thanks to Paul at the excellent Nightporter site for confirming all this for me recently. Perhaps blame it on a naughty bootlegger trying to sell more copies by giving 1 recording different names...
There are also at least 3 different circulated versions of this gig (under it's different names!) - a really quite unlistenable audience recording which contains the intro tape (Despair), a 12 track setlist and a full 15 track setlist - neither having Despair and running at slightly different speeds in widely varied sound quality. I concentrated on the 15 track set and have restored that, with the addition of a restored (as best I could) intro "Despair" tape at the beginning from the one that had awful quality; so you will notice the sound quality improves quite a bit once Despair finishes.
ALL the recordings of this gig are from the audience and NOT FM radio broadcasts, whatever they might say in any notes accompanying them. With that in mind, I got to work and several hours over several days later, here we are:
I reduced the ambient reverb on the recording to bring out more of the music; fixed the tape faults that I could; brought down the piercing screams of several excitable Japanese girls (!), improved the stereo image a little and then got to work with EQ. Large hall audience recordings generally swim in distorting midrange mud which masks everything - I cleared a lot of that away, tightened up the low end, so Mick Karn and Steve Jansen are more audible, reduced selected mids and boosted some of the higher frequencies so Rob Dean, Richard Barbieri can be heard and finally made David Sylvian's vocals and intros clearer too. For those interested, all sources used were lossless audio files and all work done, was also done in lossless.
All that said, don't expect this to sound like a crystal clear radio broadcast - but it's now far better than any of the bootlegs I've heard. I hope you enjoy this much improved complete restoration of this concert.

Show 148 - Depeche Mode - Live At The Suedwest Stadium Ludwigshafen - 2 June 1984
An overdue return this time for Depeche Mode - this time featuring an FM broadcast of a one off live performance some months before the release of Some Great Reward when they played an open air festival headlined by Elton John. The set is mainly selected tracks from their Construction Time Again tour (go here for a link to a show from that tour) but does feature their current single at the time, People Are People for the very first time live on stage.
I've heard a few versions of this recording and I chose the best sounding complete source to work with - even so it needed several hours work just to fix tape drop outs and FM interference/distortion. After that, several more hours working on EQ to even out the sound as much as possible and then make it sound clearer and sharper.
I hope you enjoy this much improved recording.

Show 147 - Crowded House - Live At The UCSD Gymnasium, La Jolla - 8 April 1989
A long overdue return for Crowded House - all their shows have been hugely popular on Live and Loud! over the years; this one deserves to be too, featuring really good and clear sound quality, the usual witty stage banter and a fantastic performance from the guys on stage.
This was a soundboard recording and in good condition overall - far better than some I've had to deal with. All that really needed doing was careful EQing to lower the keyboards which were pretty loud, bring some space between the instruments and make the drums clearer, so you can hear the whole band really well.
I hope you enjoy this much improved recording. You can safely download all of this improved recording for free HERE as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way.

Show 146 - Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Live At London School Of Economics - 12 Dec 1985
It's not often you come across Sigue Sigue Sputnik live recordings so when a listener said he had one I was only too happy to borrow his tape and transfer it to a lossless digital format.
This is an audience recording from what sounds like a not very full LSE. I now have software that can remove some of the natural ambience from audience recordings and make the music a bit more prominent, so that was my first step. Then fixing a few tape dropouts and noises before removing tape noise. The last stage was then controlling volume levels at various points and applying a 30 band EQ to the restored recording to improve the sound quality.
I hope you enjoy this much improved recording. You can safely download all of this improved recording for free HERE as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way.

Show 145: Ultravox - Live at Jaap Edenhal, Amsterdam, 16 June 1981
A rare but energetic and powerful set from Ultravox this time - at least, excerpts from one. I think this must have been a radio broadcast as the source was in stereo. I thought with it being only 6 tracks, it would be quick and simple! I never learn - it rarely works out that way... :-)
The recording was too fast to start with, so needed slowing down a bit.
There was also a lot of hum and noise - took quite a while to remove as much of that as possible without damaging the sound quality.
Then a few tape dropouts and the usual 30 band EQ to bring the sound up to scratch and make it clearer.
For one track on the source, the intro was slightly incomplete so I fixed it (I challenge you to spot which song that was).
For All Stood Still there had already been done some editing to fade in the song, missing off the beginning altogether But quite by chance I found a Dutch TV broadcast online with 4 songs from this set in it (albeit in the wrong order), including a complete version of the song in question (a link to the video is below, it's really good)! The only problem was that the video was in mono...so I grabbed the video soundtrack and messed about with it a lot to make it more closely match the other songs, then put it all together with the other 5 songs I'd already done. When you listen now, or watch the video, you will notice Chris Cross's bass synth intro is in the wrong key! Midge Ure goes over to him and tells him what the correct key is...I guess for radio, they decided to cut that out and fade it in from where it was ok...Me, I like the mistakes - makes it all sound far more human and imperfect.
This recording, therefore, is unique to Live and Loud! Shows - until other bootleg sites take it, change the artwork and call it theirs, anyway.
You can safely download all of this improved recording for free HERE as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way.

Show 144 - Roxy Music - Live In Paris, 27 Nov 1974
A bit of a gem, this one. I acquired (can't remember where, now) a first generation digital copy taken from the original master tape. Credit for that transfer from tape 100% goes to the now seemingly long defunct "Hal's Progressive Rock Blog" online who apparently was given access to the tape some years ago - it was being thrown out by the radio station that recorded and broadcast it!
The original recording is mono, so I've not only done some work on that but also created (and worked on separately) a new pseudo stereo master which does sound really good, I think.
I had to do a fair bit of work fixing a few clicks and tape dropouts which were quite fiddly, before creating the stereo version. Then the fixed mono and stereo files were separately EQed to bring out the best in this recording.
You can safely download all of this improved recording either in mono or stereo at the links below, all as as one 320 kbps MP3 file - no pop ups or adverts getting in the way.

Show 143 - Slade - Live At The Glasgow Apollo - 26 March 1982
This show was originally sent to me by a listener requesting that as I'd done a couple of Slade shows before, could I have a go at this one? After a trial go on the MP3s they'd sent, I eventually found a lossless copy online and worked from that.
Originally an FM broadcast, but the first half was significantly lower quality than the second - until the end of Lock Up Your Daughters the sound was far flatter and muffled. And in mono! So I've worked on the 2 sides separately and then brought them together. I used some studio tools on part 1 to open the sound out a bit so it sounded closer to part 2 and then there was a lot of work with EQing both sides separately to sort out. In fact, I've had several goes at this on and off over the last few months - but hopefully you will enjoy the result.
It was worth persevering with - the show really rocks! Maybe 1982 could be said to be in the twilight of their careers but Slade were still on top form and sounding like they enjoyed every minute - as does a noisy Apollo crowd.

Radio Prog 9 - The Sisters of Mercy - John Peel Session Broadcast 11 July 1984
***2021 UPDATE***
As of this year, this session had been downloaded 731 times. All for free. An official version has now been released, so my version has been taken down. Go buy the official one. ;-)
This page is left here just for historical reference (and because I don't want to delete it all).
Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, which started in January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.
No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Tracklisting
1. Walk Away
2. Emma
3. The Poison Door
4. No Time To Cry
Sourced from lossless files. 2 tracks had a bit of FM interference, a couple more had missing beginnings. These were fixed, then 30 band EQ applied, which was different for each track. Mainly reducing overloading bottom end, reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and bringing a bit of clarity.
The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions - and as a bonus for those who prefer them, lossless FLAC versions too.

Show 142 - Ian Dury and The Blockheads - Live At The Pinkpop Festival Netherlands - 8 June 1981
Very happy to finally have the chance to remaster a set by Ian Dury and The Blockheads - such a great band to hear live. This was the full headlining set at the Pinkpop Festival in 1981, with UB40 and Madness on set earlier in the day (you can hear Dury calling them to the stage during the last song - and from a brief video on Youtube, UB40 turn up but only Mike Barson (I think) from Madness makes an appearance (and you can hear him briefly singing too!).
This wasn't in bad condition - guessing an FM recording - but the mix and sound balance is a bit ropey in places. I did what I could to fix that and EQ'ed to improve clarity and the bottom end - you couldn't hear the drums and bass much at all; now you can.

Show 141 - Culture Club - Live At The Lyceum Theatre London - 2 Nov 1982
The first upload for 2020 features Culture Club in a relatively rare early gig just as they'd hit #1 in the UK charts with "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?".
Originally an FM recording this might have been already tweaked by someone else in the past as the bass was quite overloaded and distorting in places. So I mainly attacked it with EQ this time to remove that and it sounds great - a lovely clear stereo recording of a surprisingly powerful and lively set.
