Show 196 - Siouxsie And The Banshees - Live In Tiel Netherlands - 7 July 1981

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
Originally an FM radio broadcast and not quite the complete gig - some encores are missing, I think. It sounded a bit "tinny" although it was pretty clear. According to the blurb with the bootleg, Happy House was recorded from a later broadcast of the same show. There are a couple of versions of this bootleg out there - 1 with fewer tracks than the other. And the setlist listed on Setlist.fm for this venue doesn't even have Happy House listed at all! Setlist.fm isn't always accurate, so who knows... Happy House is listed at some other gigs around that time as being played as an encore, so I went with what the text file accompanying the bootleg said, and blended it in on the end here.

What Was Done
I removed various things like a bad click after Nightshift, a weird short hum and quite a lot of FM interference noise from Voodoo Dolly. On the original, Voodoo Dolly was cut off and Happy House started - I faded out the former, while editing the latter so it blends together better. Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed that.

Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring back some bottom end to the recording and some clarity to the sound mix - you can hear Steve Severin's bass far better now and John McGeoch's guitar sings clearly without hurting your ears. Budgie's drums are also clearer. I then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall. The result is really really good; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Show 195 - Elton John - Live At Hammersmith Odeon London - 24 Dec 1974

INSERT IMAGE FIRST

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your own YouTube channel or bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. The Show
A full show recorded and broadcast at the time on FM radio and TV - however, it seems some was broadcast on FM radio in stereo and some was on TV, in mono. Somewhere along the line, somebody put the whole show together from the FM and TV recordings, so hats off to them for that. I was asked by a client to restore some Elton John live recordings, including this one. This was the last of several nights Elton played at the Hammersmith Odeon that week. Listen out for Rod Stewart, who makes an appearance for White Christmas, at the end of the show. And enjoy the band, they are phenomenally good.

What Was Done
I found a couple of spots in the show where the original recording levels were too high and distortion was introduced so I've done what I could to reduce the effect of that. There were some dropouts which I fixed. Also some clicks here and there throughout the recording were removed. Some high pitched FM interference whistling at 1 point was taken out, and an odd rumble noise at 1 point.

Once that was done, the recording was then split up again to allow stereo and mono parts of the gig to be treated separately. I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix. The TV mono parts were processed separately to blend better with the stereo parts, and then once everything was merged back together. the complete recording was mastered to make it clearer and more powerful. It sounds like a really great recording now and hopefully is the best version of this gig yet.

Show 194 - David Bowie - Live At The Montreal Forum Canada - 12 July 1983

But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. The Show
Both nights in Montreal were recorded for FM broadcast - the second night (13 July) was the one broadcast and has been widely bootlegged. THIS one is the unused first night and was sourced from 2 CD bootlegs. The show includes the brilliantly enthusiastic MC introducing Bowie, the whole set and all the encores - the show lasts just over 2 hours altogether and features 27 songs.

What Was Done
The main problem with the first night (this one) was on the first 2 songs - several instances of someone (a recording engineer/sound guy presumably - if you know, please leave a comment) deciding to talk into a mic and this being picked up REALLY LOUDLY on the recording so it obscures the band and Bowie, somewhat, for a few seconds each time. Using some of my studio toys for a few hours, I was able to reduce the volume on this guy's voice without affecting the band and Bowie. It's not gone altogether (that WAS starting to affect the music) but it's much less distracting.

There were some dips in volume to take care of and then I needed to edit the 2 CD sides together in 1 file without you noticing. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring more clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered it all to make it clearer and more powerful overall. You can really hear the instruments being played now more clearly than on the source. This is a really strong performance and a really great sounding recording now.

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. The Show
Originally captured by KSAN FM radio on the night. This is the band supporting Lou Reed, on their first tour of the USA, just a few months after the release of their first album New Boots And Panties. This is only the 2nd show of the tour - a really good support slot performance.

What Was Done
The recording was in broadly good shape when it was given to me. There were some dropouts and rough fadeouts - presumably someone at some point had removed radio ads. I cleaned up the fades and fixed a few drop outs and microphone thumps here and there. I also removed some looped audience noise between 2 songs which I guess was inadvertently added by the radio station while editing back in 1978 - but for once, this was all fairly straightforward. There is still a little tape hiss but it's so low as to be pretty unobtrusive.

The recording was a bit flat and lacking in depth and sparkle - so I got to work to bring back both - low end so you could hear the bass and kick more clearly, some clarity and space to the sound mix so guitar, snare, keyboards and vocals are all more distinct, and then mastered to make it clearer still and more powerful overall, and wider. The result sounds great I think - and brings out the best in a great live performance.

The Show
An audience recording from the time. A pseudo stereo version was passed to me by a listener a while back and while it was super wide and clear, it was also...not very powerful. Everything sounded quite far away, if you like. So I found the original mono version elsewhere on the internet and decided I would have more fun improving that.

What Was Done
There were some gaps and fadeouts - removed the gaps and improved the fadeouts so the gig flows better (the first few seconds of a couple of songs are sadly missing). Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed that. There was some mains hum noticeable in quiet parts - removed most of that. The last few songs sound like they're from a different source and were louder on the left than the right - fixed that. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and wider. The result is really really nice; I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And if, like me, you really enjoy those drum fills in Bombers - turn the sound up for a treat! Ced is nice and clear in this recording.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 12 - Strawberry Switchblade - John Peel Session Broadcast - 5 Oct 1982

But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Stealing it and taking the credit isn't cool. Thanks.

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, starting in January 2017, featuring radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired, restored and then remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original restored session, available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Tracklisting:
1. 10 James Orr Street
2. Little River
3. Secrets
4. Trees And Flowers

The very brief intro and first line on 10 James Orr Street was missing, so I faded that in. Also a small section of Secrets sounds like it was from a different copy of the recording and was spliced in as a repair at some point in the past. I've done what I can to make that blend in better. Otherwise it has cleaned up very nicely and is a nice set of early 80s jangly and moody pop!

The zip file for this session contains remastered FLAC and MP3 versions - the source files were low grade MP3s - I saved these in lossless WAV format to work on and then exported these from that lossless master. You can download it HERE.

If you wish to express gratitude and donate a dollar or the cost of a coffee towards site costs in return, head on over to the Donations tab. Not mandatory of course - just enjoy the tracks.

And if you know anyone who wants a copy of these tracks, give 'em the link to this page - helps me gauge which artists are popular! But if you do redistribute the files please at least keep the tracks together in the original zip with the info file. Thanks.

Enjoy!

Latest Site News (August 2023)

I put this in the last newsletter already but for anyone just finding the site or not wanting to subscribe to that - some site news!

Those of you who have been following Live and Loud! Shows for a few years might remember that every so often I have to take a break due to chronic (ie long term) health stuff that sometimes gets worse and takes over. Unfortunately that time has come along again. I’ve already been spending less time on screens than usual recently but it seems that’s not helping, so I plan on taking a few weeks off from this. Hoping to be back working on restorations in September but it will take as long as it takes...it's not really something I can plough on through and carry on without making things very much worse.

Anyone donating to the site will still get whatever they request; they rarely take long to sort out and I will be checking emails most days. But as I keep saying - you can also download anything on the site for free; the only thing I ask from you is that you enjoy the restorations! :-)

If you like what's on the site, please consider subscribing to the free newsletter (spam free) so you never miss news on which new gigs are going to be restored and uploaded here; any news will be delivered to your inbox. Or pass links to the pages of gigs you enjoy on to friends/fans/social media.

Back soon. Be good. x

The Show
Originally an FM radio broadcast. Copies online are usually marked as 2 December 1983 - but all sources I can find point to the band playing ending the UK tour by playing on the 2 and 3 December at the Hammersmith Odeon, and as you will hear, Annie Lennox does say "this is the last night of the Touch tour" which would suggest the recording is from the 3 December, so that's what I've gone with.

What Was Done
Fortunately only a couple of dropouts and a bad edit needed fixing before I got to work - the applause after Who's That Girl? is chopped off suddenly (someone turning the tape over, I suspect!) and the beginning of "I Could Give You (A Mirror)" is similarly truncated, so I blended those together so the recording flows better. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall. The result is really really nice; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

The Show

Another band long overdue an appearance on on the site - The Cult. This sounds like an FM broadcast but as there's no radio chatter at all - no jingles either - I suspect this was a recording prepared for broadcast, rather than the actual broadcast itself (if you see what I mean). As such it was overall in good shape but a bit flat.

What Was Done

The usual listen through fixing odd gaps and dropouts and parts where the sound changes noticeably - a few changes in volume from track to track. The recording was lacking quite a lot in the bottom end so I then got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and make it clearer and more powerful overall.

The Show

Another band long overdue an appearance on on the site - The Clash! The file was labeled as a soundboard but given the existing production on it I'm guessing it was done by a radio station as it was pretty well mixed (mostly, anyway), just dull sounding. Some tracks also appeared on a King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast too, which backs that up. This is from their first tour of Canada and North America - and what better way to start your set in the USA than with...I'm So Bored With The USA!

What Was Done

The usual listen through fixing odd gaps and dropouts and parts where the sound changes noticeably - it went very dull in the first song for about 30 seconds, for example, and there were a few dropouts through the set I fixed. It also sounded like the recording was made up of several recordings cut together - a couple of occasions where applause after a song is cut off and then jumps back in with the next song already starting, and the subsequent songs sound quality was different! So I blended and tweaked those to fit seamlessly together as much as possible. There's one song where guitar appears on the right, very over cooked and loud; I took that down as much as possible. Recording levels in places are a little hot but nothing bad enough to detract from making this available. I then got to work with EQ, compression and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and clearer, more powerful.

Some unreleased music lasting just over 11 minutes, from a 1973 ballet soundtrack by Jean Michel Jarre that was recorded for French television. Someone posted a link on a JMJ Facebook group to a video of the ballet, based on Oscar Wilde's The Face of Dorian Gray on YouTube this week - this seems to be the first time many have come across the music - much of which seems to be versions of music from Jarre's first 2 albums - Deserted Palace and Les Granges Brulees - used only for this production, along with some that seems to be unheard before.

Given the rarity of this music and not having heard it before, I naturally wanted to  improve it for my own listening pleasure - and have made this available for free to anyone else to enjoy too.

You can watch the original ballet recording here:-

What Was Done
The broadcast was from French television in 1973, so of course was in mono. I worked with EQ, compression and the usual studio and mastering toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and managed to bring out some things that were very difficult to hear, and also bring in more separation and a wider listening image - not quite stereo of course but for me a more pleasant listen; I've made the audio sound a little wider without losing quality or clarity, and without making it sound gimmicky.

Tracklisting

5 tracks with no known titles, although track 2 is based on La Cage, and track 3 is based on a previously released rarity called Black Bird.

Supporting The Site

If you want to support the work I do head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see what you can obtain for a very small donation towards the site costs, or just click on the Ko-fi link at the top of the page.

Bearing in mind how short this soundtrack is, and that the original audio came from YouTube (and so had compressed audio), I haven't bothered to prepare separated MP3 or FLAC versions of this recording. There is no obligation to donate of course - you can take the file on this page absolutely for free - but every single donation does go towards this site and domain/storage costs, and helps the site stay open, and helps me do more (and store more) restorations. Either way, I hope you enjoy this one.

At the very least, if you haven't already - please check out the restorations of Jean Michel Jarre live recordings elsewhere on the site.

Show 188 - New Order - Live In Oakland, California - 20 Aug 1985

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show

A debut on the site for New Order. This was a soundboard recording from their US tour and was in good shape overall apart from the kick drum being overloaded. It was also sounding a bit flat, lifeless and dry as most soundboards do.

What Was Done

Noise reduction was done, a few pops removed and the occasional loss in volume in places. Once that was done I got to work with EQ, compression and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and just...well make everything much clearer, more powerful and generally more LIVE sounding, with more separation. The original sounded like it had been worked on at some point but the kick drums all the way through were overloaded and a bit distorted, so I dialled that back too. The final result sounds far more balanced now (and less likely to give you a headache). I also improved the stereo imaging a bit during the mastering process.

Show 187 - Toyah - Live At Glasgow Apollo - 8 July 82

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. The Show

A debut on the site for Toyah. This was excerpts from a show originally broadcast on Radio Clyde here in Scotland and was a basically sound but fairly flat and muddy cassette recording once upon a time.

What Was Done

The volume levels were a bit uneven in places so I fixed that. Also some tape dropouts (where the sound disappears on either the left or right channel). There was quite a bit of FM noise in places - that has either gone or been substantially reduced. The recording stopped after We Are and then came back in with a radio announcer at the start of I Wanna Be Free - We Are now fades at the end and then back in for Free - I left in the radio announcer as it was very brief.

Once all that was done I got to work with EQ, compression and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and just...well make everything much clearer, more powerful and generally...well, more LIVE sounding. This is a great alternative to the Warrior Rock live album that was recorded at Hammersmith that year.

Show 186 - Runrig - Live At Alloa Town Hall - 30 May 1988

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show

A debut on the site for a very talented live band hailing from Scotland - Runrig - who had a lifespan stretching from the 1970s to 2018. This was a fairly murky audience recording of the whole gig, recorded from quite far back, submitted by a listener and I was asked if I could do anything with it. I get quite a few requests like that but don't often think they're suitable for the website - but I haven't found any other Runrig recordings and this is a great live show, showcasing what a great live act they were, as well as just lively a Scottish crowd can be! So - I gave it a go.

What Was Done

There were a few sections where the volume dropped quite a bit, so those got leveled out, and also one spot where the tape was presumably flipped over - this had been edited by somebody already but I fiexed it so it fades out and back in more smoothly. I also removed a particularly LOUD bit of feed back at one point (my ears are still suffering a bit from that one!).

Otherwise, in the main it was the usual with audience recordings - remove some of the venue ambience to bring back more of the band (but without making it sound unnatural), then get to work with EQ, compression and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, bring out the drums, clear up the muddy sound as best I could, and make the vocals clearer. This is still very much an audience recording but I think it's far more listenable now. As often happens, the sound mix gets clearer after the first couple of songs or so.

Show 185 - OMD - Live At Milton Keynes Bowl - 24 Aug 1991

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit (you know who you are). Thanks.

The Show

An interesting show from OMD this time, dating back to when OMD was basically Andy McCluskey after he and the other members of the band had parted ways a couple of years earlier. This was their full live set supporting The Stranglers and Simple Minds - to what sounds like a rapturous reception, it has to be said. Broadcast live on FM radio at the time, this recording was supplied to me by a listener to Live and Loud! Shows. Being live it includes the moment when the power cuts out, bringing 1 song to a very quick close! However, kudos is definitely due in the way the band dealt with that and straight away went into something else.

What Was Done

There were a huge number of tiny gaps in the audio, especially in the first half of the gig - tape dropouts perhaps, which took a long long time to smooth out and I've fixed as many of them as possible - there are some left I couldn't fix - mainly in the first song or 2.

Every song on the source faded out during the applause after and the joins back in to the next song were often disjointed - I fixed all those so the songs fade out and back in much more smoothly. After that, I lowered the pitch and speed a little as it all ran a bit fast and breathless (and a little high pitched). Then the nitty gritty parts - EQ, compression, the usual studio toys to improve the sound mix and create space for the bass, drums, vocals and synth parts. There wasn't a lot of bass end, so I fattened that a bit, so the kick drums and bass are far more solid now, and the original recording had quite a lot of top end, so I rounded that off so it doesn't hurt the ears. So yes, this one took a while.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 11 - Elvis Costello and The Attractions - John Peel Session Broadcast - 13 March 1978

1. (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
2. The Beat
3. Pump It Up
4. You Belong To Me

All tracks were in pretty good shape (for once) which made things a little easier - no major repairs were required before I cleaned up the sound somewhat, mainly bringing back some bottom end, and bringing more clarity and life, adding some space between the instruments before final mastering.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions - and as a bonus for those who prefer them, lossless FLAC versions too. You can download it HERE.

If you wish to express gratitude and donate a dollar or the cost of a coffee towards site costs in return, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can also receive freebies for a very small donation towards the site costs.

And i f you know anyone who wants a copy of these tracks, give 'em the link to this page - helps me gauge which artists are popular! But if you do redistribute the files please at least keep the tracks together in the original zip with the info file. Thanks.

Enjoy!

Another Gary Numan show for you this time. This was a very good audience recording, which responded well to some studio toys to clean up the sound, make it clearer and give it a bit more "oomph". All the drums, bass, guitar and synths are rather clearer now.

There are a few cuts in the recording and 2 small ones remain which I couldn't fix - during Berserker, the recording skips a couple of seconds during Karen Taylor's solo vocal part way through, and the intro and first note of Down In The Park was missing altogether, so rather than have it jump in loudly, I faded it in with the cheering after the previous song. The rest is pretty special, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
