Show 206 - The Jam - Live At Pinkpop Festival, Netherlands - 26 May 1980

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
Most of this was a radio broadcast I was sent. I realised after a bit of research that 2 songs were missing, so looked around the web for another recording. And there was another one, which included those missing tracks - but omitted some of Start!. And it was quite inferior in quality - it was in stereo but sounded more like it was from the audience, not a radio broadcast, although it was still in stereo, at least.

What Was Done
I worked on the main recording first of all and got that to a state I was happy with, then worked on the missing tracks. I had to remove a lot of ambience on those to make the band sound louder, then I noticed the stereo image was reversed from the radio broadcast - the bass and guitars were on the opposite side. So I turned those around, then worked on the sound a lot to make it blend better with the rest of the gig. Then I worked on blending in the songs at the right time, so it didn't sound like too jarring a change each time. Then I mastered everything.

This is now the complete show. And it sounds pretty awesome, as do the band themselves. There are actually 3 parts of this recording that have been brought in to make the complete gig - see if you can spot them all...

The Show
Originally sent to me on cassette by a listener to the site. This was an audience recording and not a terribly clear one. I have had several attempts to improve this since he sent it to me over the last 3 years and recently had another go - and finally, I got to a point where I was happy for it to go on the site. Bear in mind it doesn't compare to, say, a restored FM or soundboard recording but the rarity of the recording, with it being from just before they released their first album, makes it worthwhile I think.

What Was Done
I took away some of the reverb first of all to give me more of the sound of the band to work with. There were gaps and clicks here and there - fixed those. Noise reduction was done (it was very hissy). Lots of filtering and EQ to stop the overly loud guitar piercing ear drums and bring back some bottom end and the drums. Finally I was able to master to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and wider. I hope you enjoy the result.
